CIT: Counselor in Training

(Multiple states)
Seasonal
Student (High School)
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Counselor-in-Training (CIT) for Camp Indigo's 2026 season! Please read the following information carefully before submitting your application.

About the CIT Opportunity!
Camp Indigo’s Counselor-in-Training (CIT) program is a leadership opportunity for returning campers ages 15–17 who want to help create safe, joyful, affirming camp experiences for younger trans and gender-expansive youth. CITs are not just “older campers,” they are emerging leaders who support counselors, model inclusive behavior, and help build the community care that makes Camp Indigo special. The program is designed for teens who are excited to grow their leadership skills while staying rooted in trans joy, mutual respect, and collective responsibility.

What Do CITs Do During Camp?
As a CIT, you will support our camp experience in the following ways:
  1. Support counselors and staff during daily camp activities
  2. Help younger campers feel welcome, included, and respected
  3. Practice leadership skills like communication, teamwork, and problem-solving
  4. Learn how to support campers with a range of identities, access needs, and emotions
  5. Receive guidance, feedback, and mentorship from Camp Indigo staff
  6. Participate in training and check-ins focused on safety, boundaries, and inclusion

CITs always work under staff supervision and are never responsible for discipline, medical care, or situations that require adult intervention.

Who Should Apply?
We welcome application from teens ages 15–17 who have previously attended Camp Indigo. We are seeking applicants who want to give back to the Camp Indigo community, enjoy helping younger kids and being part of a team, are open to learning, feedback, and personal growth, and can commit to camp expectations around safety, respect, and accountability. Some teens choose to be a CIT for one week and attend as a regular camper another week, which is totally awesome and welcome!

What Are Camp Indigo's Values?
Camp Indigo is designed by trans and gender-expansive people for trans and gender-expansive youth. Our CIT program is grounded in:

Lead with Yes
A yes means forward momentum. It means proactivity and care. It means doing all we can to bring joy.

Joy in Everything We Do
This is a summer camp after all! Play and the joy that comes from play can (and should) exist everywhere! We - as trans people especially - deserve it.

Invite Each Other In
Respectful conflict is an act of love. It requires timely dialogue and trust. We don't call each other out - we invite each other in.

Community Above All Else
Everything we do is for the good of the community. Honoring our intersectional identities, protecting spaces for our most marginalized campers and staff, and celebrating the magic that is being trans are all foundational to the success of this program.

CITs are expected to actively uphold these values and help make camp a space where everyone feels safer to be themselves. Camp Indigo isn't a camp about being trans, it's a space for campers to just be, and as a CIT you will be help create a safe space for campers to exist and for trans joy to thrive!

Before you apply, please note that CITs are leaders and role models during camp. You will be required to attend training and orientation, and during camp Staff Members may step in or redirect CITs to ensure camper safety. Not all applicants may be accepted, and applying does not guarantee placement.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email our Manager of Community Programs, Addie (they/them) at [email protected]. Thank you, and we look forward to reviewing your application!
