Camp Indigo: Lead Instructor (for Kids Ages 5-11)

Austin, TX
Seasonal
Mid Level

Camp Indigo, the first day camp for transgender and gender nonconforming kids, is looking for Instructors for the 2024 season. Instructors lead 4 sessions of an activity per day for groups of campers 5-12 years old. Workshops include, but aren’t limited to science, art, movement, and outdoor activities - all of which aim to fit the expertise of each instructor.

Lead Instructors set the tone and structure for a successful “class,” and as such require a particular experience and level of teaching style to reach peak engagement. Camp Indigo Instructors are creative, organized, goofy, and patient. This is camp after all!

Responsibilities include setting up and leading workshops, creating a welcoming and fun classroom environment, and participating in games, songs, and other activities throughout the day. Relationship building with children, guardians, and other staff members is essential. We are looking for people who can match the energy of 5-12 year olds and lead projects in an accessible and engaging way.

Responsibilities:

  • Organize classroom and project materials and leverage/personalize curriculum to best meet the needs to campers
  • Lead four daily rotations of 55 minute long workshop sessions for groups of 15-25 campers
  • Develop friendly, affirming, and genuine relationships staff and campers - allowing for trust, safety, and productivity in the classroom
  • Assist with daily setup and cleanup of camp
  • Participate in all-camp activities - most of which are song and/or play-based
  • Ensure that Team Leaders are clear on their in-classroom responsibilities and expectations as it relates to supporting their respective teams

Skills:
  • Experience and familiarity with the transgender youth community
  • Teaching/workshop leading experience required. Ability to earn the attention of a room, to pivot when projects aren’t working, to manage classroom dynamics, to keep space tidy and organized, and to present the flow of a project in an age appropriate way will all contribute to success within this role
  • Ability to match the energy, sense of humor and needs of 5-12 year olds
  • Practice “Yes Leadership” - where we proactively look for ways to improve the program and experience of our campers and adult peers
  • An outgoing and energetic personality. To be clear, we don’t expect everyone to be wild extroverts. We actually need our introverts. AND we still need all staff to be able to meet the energy needs to campers
  • Clear and effective communication skills. We lift each other up - and this means addressing conflict as it happens, setting body and emotional boundaries, and being an ally to our camp community
  • A strong practice of reliability and punctuality. Camp only runs 1-3 weeks depending on location. Your fellow staff (and campers) are counting on you!
  • Willingness to try new things. Sometimes it gets weird and messy around here. We need you to be excited about that
  • First aid/CPR certified preferred

Schedule:

  • 8am- 4pm Monday-Friday during scheduled camp weeks. Note that there is a preference for staff who can work all weeks in their chosen location. All dates are provided below for information purposes.
    • Boulder, CO: June 3rd-7th; June 10th-14th

    • Austin, TX: July 15th - 19th; July 22nd - 26th

    • $20.60/hr in Boulder, CO
    • $22.35/hr in Oakland, CA
